Theme: CULTURAL CROSSROADS
Do you have a powerful narrative about your experience at a cultural crossroad? Whether it’s a personal experience of culture shock, reflections on your relationship to immigration through parents or loved ones, encounters with new cultures through neighbors, colleagues, friends, or new foods, or the impact of engagement with culturally relevant and informed causes that have shaped your perspectives and fueled positive change, we’d like to hear your story. This event is an opportunity to celebrate those crossroads and foster understanding amongst many cultures, through the art of storytelling.
We are currently working on a theme for JULY and are interested in your ideas! Pitch us a story at: info@storytellersofnewmexico.org
FORMAT: THREE FEATURED & FOUR OPEN MIC TELLERS:
ABOUT US: Founded in 2018, Duke City Story Slam is Albuquerque’s only story slam (friendly storytelling competition). An accessible event including both Featured Tellers and Open Mic-ers telling true personal stories on a theme. Prizes are given for the top scoring Featured and Open Mic Tellers and through the audience raffle. All remaining tellers are awarded a certificate for two to attend a future DCSS show. Everyone is a winner at DCSS — with our gratitude.
FEATURED TELLERS are recruited ahead of time and are provided with story crafting support and a rehearsal before the slam with our professional coach, Barry Simon. This month we welcome return Open Mic Teller, Sandra Vulé, along with veteran DCSS teller, Paulina Pryztupa and newcomer, Eldrena Douma.
Featured tellers get 10-minutes on the mic to tell their story. Canteen Brewhouse also provides a small stipend to featured tellers.
OPEN MIC TELLERS can prep their story beforehand or spontaneously put their name in the hat at the mic for a chance to tell their 5-minute true story on that month’s theme. Open mic tellers often progress to being a featured teller at another event.
OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Thanks to all who stepped up to serve as timekeeper and judges. We are still in need of a photographer. Thanks for letting us know if you can participate — and score a free beer/drink at the slam. Let us know if you’d like to join us for one or more show! Be part of the story! Interested? Email HERE
OUR TEAM: Emcee and Co-Producer, Swim Karim, is taking DCSS by storm since taking the mic as emcee in November 2023. Sarah Malone, DCSS co-producer is a founding member of our parent nonprofit, Storytellers of New Mexico, and an enthusiastic supporter of DCSS since its inception in 2018 by former Producer, Nash Jones. Many thanks to our professional coach, Barry Simon, formerly of popular Liar’s Game. We acknowledge Dianne Rossbach, STNM treasurer, for her steadfast presence at each event at the gate.
PITCH US A STORY! We are booking several months in advance - so it is never too early to pitch us a story that might just be the theme for an upcoming show. info@storytellersofnewmexico.org
