Theme: LISTEN…!

Listening is a much valued skill, often touted as more important than speaking! When and how does it begin? Perhaps with parents warning a child to, “Listen here!,” or a teacher pleading with unruly students to “Pipe down and LISTEN!” Or, perhaps your listening journey goes deeper - listening to nature, the beat of your own, or your infant child’s heart, listening to silence or the mysteries of your own soul; perhaps learning to listen in a whole new way when hearing, in the traditional sense, is not a choice.

Whatever your experience, we’re interested in listening to your story!

FORMAT: THREE FEATURED AND FOUR OPEN MIC TELLERS : Come listen to two newcomers to the DCSS stage, Chris Fulcher & Marvin Cotton and DCSS old-timer, Sarah Malone.

ABOUT US: Duke City Story Slam is Albuquerque’s only story slam (friendly storytelling competition). An accessible event including both Featured Tellers and Open Mic-ers telling true personal stories on a quarterly theme. Prizes are given for the top scoring Featured and Open Mic Tellers and through the audience raffle.

WELCOME SWIM KARIM AS EMCEE! Seasoned DCSS teller, Swim Karim, came on board in November 2023 as our new emcee for the bi-monthly DCSS events. Swim has a passion for community service, volunteerism and self discovery, especially in the form of travel. Originally from the East Coast, Swim has called Albuquerque home since 2014.

WELCOME BARRY SIMON - NEW DCSS COACH! Long a friend of DCSS, Barry Simon, former producer of the popular “Liar’s Game,” began coaching our three featured tellers prior to each DCSS show last November. Barry brings a wealth of knowledge and skill and is sure to strengthen the power of the stories we hear on the DCSS stage. Thank you so much, Barry!

FEATURED TELLERS are recruited ahead of time and are provided with story crafting support and a rehearsal with our professional coach, Barry Simon, before the slam. They get 10-minutes on the mic to tell their story. Canteen Brewhouse also provides a small stipend to featured tellers!

OPEN MIC TELLERS can prep their story beforehand or spontaneously put their name in the hat at the mic for a chance to tell their 5-minute true story on that month’s theme. Open mic tellers often progress to being a featured teller at another event!

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: We always need volunteers to help as judges, time keeper and photographer. All these slots are open for November 14th! Let us know if you’d like to join us for one or more show! Be part of the story! Interested? Email HERE

Pitch us a Story! We are booking several months in advance - so it is never too early to pitch us a story that might just be the theme for an upcoming show. info@storytellersofnewmexico.org
